Island Style Cafe in San Diego, CA

Island Style Cafe is the closest Hawaii local food eatery near us.  We found it while we were on the search for local foods when we first arrived in California from Maryland where we made all the local foods at home.

We tried it one evening for dinner and the food is just like home.  We didn't really get the crepe thing but I guess it must be their specialty or something.  We have had the chicken katsu, kaloco moco, barbeque chicken, fried rice, etc.. with mac salad and rice of course and everything has been ono.  We have gone back a few times since and have enjoyed their food every time.

The restaurant is clean, the staff is friendly, there is one bathroom in the back off the kitchen, there is ample parking, they have a tv up on the back wall, it is kid friendly and the prices are affordable.

I was referred by a friend to this company (thank you Melody!).  Walk-in's are welcome.  I was assisted as soon as I walked in their door.  The staff is friendly, the salon was quiet, clean and nice.  There is plenty of parking.  Waxing services were completed to my satisfaction.  They are still having a Grand Opening special of 20% off your bill so now is a great time to check them out.  They are definitely getting my repeat business plus referrals to friends.

ASYMCA San Diego More Free Tickets For San Diego County Fair

On Friday, June 24, 2011, the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) San Diego will be giving away up to 4 free admissions (a $52 value) per eligible military with id to the San Diego County Fair from 1-3pm at two locations: 3293 Santo Road, San Diego, CA 92124 or Naval Base Office located in Building 71.   They ask you to bring a thank you note made out to the San Diego Fair, kids drawings are always a hit!

Free Admission To The San Diego County Fair

The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA), offered up to 4 free admissions (a $52 value) to the San Diego County Fair to eligible military service members and their spouses with a valid military id and a thank you card made out to the San Diego Fair this morning at 9:00am.  When we arrived just before 9am, the line was already long.  To pass some time while standing in line, Tanya and I began talking about all the free things to do in San Diego.  By the time we were toward the front of the line, they announced that they only had 100 tickets left and we hoped they had enough for our families.  In order to receive your tickets, you had to have your military id card out, your thank you card made out to the San Diego Fair and how many tickets you needed.  We were really happy when we finally made it to the front of the line and we were able to get 4 free tickets each for our families to enjoy a beautiful, fun day at the San Diego County Fair.  The line moved quickly and we were out of there in no time.  This was the first time that we had ever gone to pick up any type of free tickets from them.

Thank you ASYMCA and San Diego County Fair for offering these free admission to military service members and their families!  It is so appreciated and this will allow our family to enjoy a beautiful day together.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Tyler's Panda Project

This week Tyler had a Panda Project.  He had to create a diarama and write some things about pandas.

In preparation for this project, on Tuesday I picked up some books about pandas at our local library that we read together.  From reading about the pandas, he decided what he wanted to write.

Then on Wednesday, I headed over to Michaels to get supplies Tyler said he needed for his project so that he would have everything ready to work on it on Wednesday afternoon when he got home from school.  When he got home from school he was so excited to start working on it.  First he colored the entire inside of the box green.

Then I helped him glue the silk bamboo in because I did not want the cement glue to get on his hands.  After we got the bamboo in, he gathered the rest of his supplies and told me where he wanted everything.  For the clay panda, I showed him how to roll it and put it together.  It wasn't really coming out as he would have liked it so I gave him pointers on shaping it.  I instructed him on how to form it from the instructions.

For the larger pandas, we went online and printed two pictures and he cut them out and placed them where he wanted them.

It took a couple of tries before he finally got it the way that he wanted it.  After he put everything in their place, I helped him glue them down to the inside of the shoe box.

Here is what his finished project looks like.  Tyler did a wonderful job on his first real school project!  Great job Tyler!  We are so proud of you!

While he was allowing for the cement glue to dry, he worked on what he wanted to write about pandas.  He already had some things in mind and wanted to add to it.

Strawberry Picking In Carlsbad

On Saturday, June 4, 2011, we headed out to the Carlsbad Outlet Stores where we got some really great deals at Coach, GAP and Pac Sun.  After we were done shopping and ate lunch, we headed over to Carlsbad Pick Your Own Strawberry Farm (Carlsbad Strawberry Company) just down the road.

For Pick Your Own, there are two sizes of containers available - small ($8.50) or large ($17.50).  We opted for the larger of the two so we could really enjoy our experience with our kids.

On our way walking over to the strawberry field, we asked a worker where the sweetest ones would be located and headed over.  Here are some pictures from our day.

We all had a great time finding the rare dark strawberries that were perfect for picking.
